Book One of Holliday, Oregon

"In Moonlight, Menorahs and Mistletoe, the focus is on Hanukkah, a holiday aglow with candles, vibrant with music and dreidels and people frying up platters of latkes or sufganiyot (homemade jelly doughnuts). We tell the story of King Antiochus's attempt to abolish Judaism, and the Maccabee's victory over his army against all odds. We celebrate the miracle that one small jar of oil, enough to provide just twenty-four hours' worth of flame, lasted eight nights. But it's more than that.
"The light-filled holiday reminds us to appreciate and protect our uniqueness--other people's, as well--and never to allow a tyrant of any size to minimize or homogenize or erase us. Sometimes the tyrant is our own fear. Especially the fear of letting someone see who we really are.
"For a long time now, both Eden Berman and Gideon Bowen have been afraid to live fully or love passionately. There are mistakes too difficult to overcome and risks too terrifying to take. At least, that's what they've told themselves. But in a town like Holliday, Oregon, in a season where wonders abound, they're about to discover that anything is possible."
